Packing for Lourdes is both simpler and more specific than packing for a typical holiday. The Sanctuary has a dress code, the climate changes quickly near the mountains, and there are practical items that experienced pilgrims always bring but first-timers invariably forget. Here is what our pilgrimage leaders recommend after many years guiding pilgrims to Lourdes.

Clothing

Modest dress is required throughout the Sanctuary Domain. Women should have their shoulders and knees covered when entering churches and the Grotto; men should avoid vests and very short shorts. Bring at least one set of "Sanctuary clothes", a top with sleeves, trousers or a skirt at knee length or below. For the evening Torchlight Procession, bring something warm: Pyrenean evenings can be cool even in July. A light waterproof jacket is essential, mountain weather changes quickly. For walking pilgrims: bring broken-in footwear only. New shoes will ruin your journey.

Spiritual Essentials

A rosary, even if you do not normally pray the rosary, you will likely want one at Lourdes. A small prayer book or missal. A journal, many pilgrims find writing helps them process what they experience. A pilgrim credential if you are walking a route to Lourdes (available at the Sanctuary information office or before departure online).

Practical Items

A refillable water bottle, the spring taps around the Grotto allow you to fill it with Lourdes water at no cost. Small containers or a 5-litre drum if you wish to bring Lourdes water home for family members who cannot travel. A small day bag or backpack. Euros in cash, some smaller stalls and donation boxes do not accept cards. Sun cream and a hat for outdoor ceremonies in summer. A folding umbrella or poncho for outdoor Masses in rain.

What NOT to Bring

Leave behind anything you would be worried about losing or having stolen (expensive jewellery, large amounts of cash). Do not bring cameras into the Baths or inside the Grotto cave. Avoid heavy luggage if you are walking a pilgrimage route, our packages include luggage transfer but there is no reason to carry more than a 8–10 kg daypack on the road.

For the Baths

Nothing, you need nothing for the Baths. Do not bring a towel (one is provided). Do not bring a change of clothes (you will not need one). Do not bring your phone or camera. Simply come as you are.

Gifts and Souvenirs

Budget for religious items, the Sanctuary has excellent gift shops selling medals, rosaries, crucifixes, Lourdes water bottles and books. Many pilgrims buy small medals or rosaries as gifts for family members who could not travel. The silver Miraculous Medal of Our Lady of Lourdes is a popular and meaningful keepsake.
