A pilgrimage to Lourdes is one of the most spiritually transformative journeys a person can make. For over 160 years, millions of pilgrims from every continent have made their way to this small town in the French Pyrenees, drawn by faith, by hope, or simply by curiosity about the extraordinary events that began here in 1858. If you are planning your first pilgrimage to Lourdes, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know.

Choosing Your Dates

Lourdes is open to pilgrims year-round, but the Sanctuary is most active between April and October. The high pilgrimage season runs from June to September, when major national pilgrimages (from Ireland, the UK, Italy, Poland and elsewhere) fill the Sanctuary and the town. If you prefer quiet reflection, consider May, early June or late September, the weather is mild, the Grotto is less crowded, and you can spend real time in silent prayer. Key dates to consider include the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes (11 February), Easter Week, and the Feast of the Assumption (15 August), when the Sanctuary sees its largest gatherings.

Getting There

The nearest airport is Lourdes–Tarbes–Pyrénées (LDE), with seasonal flights from many European cities. Alternatively, Toulouse–Blagnac (TLS) is a 90-minute drive with excellent international connections. By train, Lourdes station is on the Paris–Bayonne TGV line, a 4.5-hour journey from Paris Montparnasse. Once in Lourdes, the Sanctuary is a 10-minute walk from both the station and most hotels in the town centre.

Choosing Between an Organised Package and Independent Travel

Both approaches have their merits. An organised pilgrimage package includes accommodation, airport transfers, a dedicated pilgrimage leader, and a structured programme of ceremonies, guided tours and spiritual activities. For first-time pilgrims, this is strongly recommended, you will not have to navigate the Sanctuary programme, queue management or the logistics of the Baths on your own. Independent travel gives more flexibility but requires research. If you travel independently, download the Sanctuaires Notre-Dame de Lourdes app for the daily liturgical programme.

What to Expect at the Sanctuary

The Lourdes Sanctuary is a self-contained domain of about 50 hectares around the Grotto. Within it you will find the Grotto of Massabielle (the site of the apparitions), the sacred Baths, three main basilicas, the Way of the Cross on the hillside, the Rosary Garden, and dozens of chapels. The daily rhythm includes a morning Mass at the Grotto (typically 09:30), an afternoon Eucharistic Procession and Blessing of the Sick (17:00), and the famous Torchlight Marian Procession along the Esplanade (21:00). All of these are free to attend and open to everyone.

Practical Tips for First-Timers

Dress modestly at all times within the Sanctuary, covered shoulders and knees are expected. Bring a refillable water bottle to fill at the Lourdes spring taps near the Grotto. Budget for meals independently if you are on a package, many include only breakfast and some dinners. Most importantly, allow yourself to slow down. Lourdes is not a sightseeing destination; its power lies in stillness, repetition and presence. The pilgrims who get the most from Lourdes are those who resist the urge to rush.
