Lourdes Pilgrimage Activities

The ceremonies and spiritual experiences that define a Lourdes pilgrimage

Torchlight Marian Procession
1 hourEvery evening at 21:00 (April–October)

Torchlight Marian Procession

A river of candlelight and prayer under the Pyrenean sky

The Torchlight Marian Procession is the iconic evening ceremony of Lourdes, arguably the most visually and spiritually powerful event at the Sanctuary. As darkness falls, thousands of pilgrims gather at the Grotto, each carrying a lit candle. The procession winds slowly along the Esplanade to the Basilica forecourt as the crowd sings the "Ave Maria" in Latin and then in dozens of languages simultaneously. The sight of thousands of flickering candles reflected in the Gave river, the mingled voices of pilgrims from every nation, and the soaring Basilica spire illuminated against the night sky combine to create an experience that few who witness it ever forget.

Bathing in the Holy Waters
20–30 minutes (including wait time)Daily (April–October), closed Sundays noon–14:00

Bathing in the Holy Waters

Immerse body and soul in the miraculous spring of Lourdes

Entering the Baths of Lourdes is a uniquely intimate and profound act. Pilgrims queue patiently, then are guided by volunteer attendants (brancardiers or handmaids of Our Lady) into private cubicles where they undress and wrap in a white sheet before being led to the cold spring-water pool. A brief prayer is said, and the pilgrim is lowered backwards into the water. Many describe the experience as transformative, not because of any physical sensation (the water is cold), but because of the act of total surrender and trust in which it consists.

International Mass at the Basilica

Unite with pilgrims from every nation in the great liturgy of Lourdes

Every day at Lourdes, Masses are celebrated in the underground Basilica of Saint Pius X, in the open air before the Grotto, in the chapels of the Basilicas and in hotel conference rooms across the town. The International Mass, held each morning at 09:30 in front of the Grotto or in one of the main Basilicas, brings together pilgrimage groups from dozens of countries. The liturgy alternates between Latin and multiple vernacular languages, with the sermon translated simultaneously.

Stations of the Cross

Walk with Christ through His Passion on the hillside above Lourdes

The hillside Stations of the Cross at Lourdes is one of the great outdoor devotional routes in Catholic pilgrimage. The path ascends through woodland to a panoramic Calvary, passing 14 life-size bronze sculptural groups depicting each stage of Christ's Passion. Many pilgrims walk barefoot as an act of penance and solidarity with Christ's suffering. The reflective atmosphere, the physical effort of the climb and the beauty of the natural setting combine to make this one of the most deeply moving experiences at Lourdes.

Blessing of the Sick Ceremony
1–1.5 hoursDaily at 17:00 (follows the Eucharistic Procession)

Blessing of the Sick Ceremony

The central healing ceremony of Lourdes, prayer over the suffering

The Blessing of the Sick is the culminating act of the Lourdes liturgical day. Following the afternoon Eucharistic Procession along the Esplanade, the Blessed Sacrament is brought to the open-air altar and a solemn blessing is imparted over all the sick and suffering who are present. Pilgrims in wheelchairs and on stretchers are placed at the front; those who are well stand behind. A priest prays over each section of the crowd in turn, sweeping the monstrance across the assembled thousands. The silence that falls at this moment, followed by the communal singing of the Lourdes hymn, is indescribable.

Rosary Garden Meditation
As long as you wishOpen all day; quietest early morning and after 20:00

Rosary Garden Meditation

Find peace and silence in the beautiful Sanctuary gardens

Between the formal ceremonies and processions of Lourdes lies a wealth of quiet, green space ideal for personal prayer and contemplative walking. The Rosary Garden, a series of tree-lined paths and flowerbeds surrounding the Basilica complex, offers the perfect setting for praying the Rosary slowly, sitting in meditation or simply resting in the presence of God. At dawn and in the evening, when the major crowds have moved on, these gardens become genuinely tranquil spaces of surprising beauty.

Eucharistic Adoration at Lourdes
Open 24 hoursContinuous adoration in the Adoration Chapel and Grotto (year-round)

Eucharistic Adoration at Lourdes

Silent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament in the heart of the Sanctuary

Eucharistic Adoration — silent, sustained prayer before the Blessed Sacrament exposed in a monstrance — is one of the most intimate and powerful spiritual experiences available at Lourdes. The Sanctuary maintains perpetual adoration in the underground Adoration Chapel, which is open 24 hours a day throughout the year. At the Grotto itself, the tabernacle lamp burns without ceasing, making every visit to the cave — day or night — a moment of adoration. The underground Basilica of Saint Pius X hosts solemn Benediction services. For pilgrims who come to Lourdes seeking deep interior prayer, Adoration is often described as the hour that changes everything.

Sacrament of Reconciliation at Lourdes
10–20 minutesDaily throughout the pilgrimage season; English priests available 08:00–19:00

Sacrament of Reconciliation at Lourdes

Confession in English with experienced priests in the Sanctuary chapels

The Sacrament of Reconciliation — Confession — is one of the defining graces of a Lourdes pilgrimage. Our Lady asked Bernadette to "pray for sinners", and the Sanctuary has taken this seriously for over 160 years. English-speaking priests are available in the Chapel of Reconciliation every day of the pilgrimage season. The atmosphere of Lourdes — the Grotto, the Baths, the processions, the proximity to suffering — creates a uniquely favourable interior environment for this encounter. Many pilgrims describe their Lourdes Confession as one of the most important spiritual experiences of their lives.

Miraculous Spring Water Taps
10–15 minutesOpen 24 hours, year-round

Miraculous Spring Water Taps

Fill your bottles at the taps fed by the miraculous Lourdes spring

The miraculous spring discovered by Bernadette Soubirous on 25 February 1858 — when Our Lady told her to "drink at the spring and wash yourself there" — flows continuously at a rate of approximately 35,000 litres per day. A row of taps along the wall adjacent to the Grotto allows pilgrims to fill bottles, containers and canteens with this water at any hour of the day or night, free of charge and without limit. Approximately five million litres of Lourdes water are taken home by pilgrims every year. The water itself is chemically unremarkable — a standard French spring water — but its significance to pilgrims of faith is immeasurable.
