Four days in Lourdes is enough time to experience every major ceremony and spiritual encounter the Sanctuary offers. It is not enough time to fully exhale — that typically requires five or six days — but a well-planned four-day programme leaves no pilgrim feeling that they missed something essential. Here is our recommended hour-by-hour itinerary for a Thursday-to-Sunday short pilgrimage.

Day 1: Arrival and Evening Procession

Arrive and check in by 15:00. Walk to the Sanctuary for your first visit to the Grotto (allow 45 minutes for quiet prayer — resist the urge to rush). At 17:00, attend the Eucharistic Procession and Blessing of the Sick on the Esplanade — a profoundly moving first encounter with the ceremonial heart of Lourdes. Dinner in town (19:00–20:30). Return to the Sanctuary for the Torchlight Procession, which begins at the Grotto at 21:00. Collect your candle, follow the procession along the Esplanade and stay for the concluding blessing at the Rosary Basilica. Return to your hotel by 22:30, deeply moved and ready for sleep.

Day 2: Grotto Mass, Baths and Afternoon Ceremony

Rise early and return to the Grotto for the 09:30 international Mass celebrated at the Grotto altar — a profoundly simple ceremony with the cave and spring immediately behind the altar. After Mass, join the queue for the Baths (open from approximately 09:00; morning queues are typically 45 minutes to 1.5 hours). The afternoon is free for personal prayer at the Grotto, visiting the spring water taps to fill your bottles, and exploring the Rosary Garden. At 15:00, attend the International Mass in one of the basilicas. At 17:00, return to the Esplanade for the afternoon Eucharistic Procession. Evening: dinner and rest before a second Torchlight Procession if you wish.

Day 3: Basilicas, Way of the Cross and Blessing of the Sick

Morning: visit the three basilicas in order. Begin at the underground Basilica of Saint Pius X (best visited early when quiet); proceed to the Basilica of the Rosary (explore the 15 side chapels); ascend to the Crypt and then the upper Basilica of the Immaculate Conception for panoramic views of the Esplanade. Before lunch, walk the outdoor Way of the Cross on the hillside above the Sanctuary (allow 75 minutes). Afternoon: rest and prayer at the Grotto. At 17:00, attend the Eucharistic Procession and Blessing of the Sick — if this is your priority experience, position yourself near the front to be close to the sick pilgrims receiving the Benediction.

Day 4: Morning Grotto, Spring Taps and Departure

On your final morning, rise before breakfast for a last private visit to the Grotto in the early quiet (the Grotto is open from 05:00). This is often the most peaceful and intimate Grotto experience of the entire pilgrimage, before the crowds arrive. After breakfast, visit the spring water taps (there are several around the Grotto area) to fill any bottles or containers to bring home. Allow time for a final prayer, leave your intentions in the candle offering area, and purchase any final gifts from the Sanctuary shop. Allow at least two hours before your departure transport for a calm and unhurried leave-taking.

Practical Tips for a 4-Day Pilgrimage

Pace yourself on Day 1 — resist doing too much after a travel day. Comfortable, broken-in footwear is essential: you will walk 8–12 kilometres per day on uneven stone surfaces. Download the Sanctuaires Notre-Dame de Lourdes app before you arrive for real-time ceremony times and Baths opening information. Book a hotel within ten minutes of the Sanctuary gates — proximity matters enormously on a short stay. Bring a small backpack each day with a water bottle, light waterproof, rosary and prayer book.
