Every year, thousands of pilgrims from the United States and Canada make the transatlantic journey to Lourdes. They come from Catholic communities in New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Toronto, Montréal and beyond, drawn by faith, by family tradition, or by a desire to experience the most visited Marian shrine in the world. If you are planning a Lourdes pilgrimage from North America, this guide will help you navigate the journey efficiently and arrive ready to receive everything Lourdes has to offer.

Getting to Lourdes from the USA and Canada

There are no direct transatlantic flights to Lourdes. The most common routing for North American pilgrims is via Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG), where Air France, United, Delta and Air Canada all operate frequent transatlantic services. From Paris CDG, a TGV train from Paris Montparnasse reaches Lourdes in approximately 4.5 hours (total journey time from Paris including transfer between airports: allow 3.5–4 hours). Alternatively, a connection to Toulouse (TLS) or Biarritz (BIQ) may be available for a shorter onward transfer. Flying via London Heathrow and then onward to Lourdes or Toulouse is another viable option, particularly for Canadian travellers on routes served by Air Canada and British Airways.

Managing Jet Lag and Time Zones

Lourdes is six hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time and nine hours ahead of Pacific Standard Time. Most North American pilgrims find that arriving in France in the morning (after an overnight flight) and pushing through to bedtime at local time minimises jet lag. Give yourself one full day in Lourdes before your pilgrimage programme begins if at all possible. Light morning exercise, exposure to natural daylight, and avoiding long daytime naps all help the adjustment. The Sanctuary's rhythm actually assists acclimatisation: the morning Grotto Mass at 09:30 gives structure, and the evening Torchlight Procession at 21:00 provides a natural reason to stay awake until a reasonable local bedtime.

Best Months to Visit from North America

June and September are the ideal months for North American pilgrims. Transatlantic fares are generally lower than in July–August, European crowds are more manageable, and Lourdes is at its most atmospheric in these shoulder months. The Sanctuary is fully operational with all ceremonies and Baths open. July and August offer the richest international pilgrimage community experience but require more advance planning and higher budgets. A pilgrimage timed to coincide with the Feast of the Assumption (15 August) or the great national pilgrimages is an unforgettable experience, provided you book months ahead.

Joining a European Pilgrimage Group

North American pilgrims have two main options: travelling independently or joining a structured pilgrimage programme. Independent travel gives flexibility and is perfectly feasible for fit, experienced travellers. However, first-time pilgrims almost universally report that joining an organised programme transforms the Lourdes experience. A good pilgrimage company provides airport transfers, accommodation steps from the Sanctuary, a structured daily programme, priority access to the Baths, and a community of fellow pilgrims with whom to share the experience. Our English-language programmes are designed specifically for pilgrims travelling from English-speaking countries, including North America.

Budget Planning for US and Canadian Pilgrims

A transatlantic Lourdes pilgrimage typically costs USD $2,500–$4,500 per person for a week, depending on flight class, accommodation standard and season. This includes return transatlantic flights ($700–$1,500), Lourdes land package ($700–$1,200) and spending money ($200–$400). Almost everything at the Sanctuary itself is free: the Grotto, the Baths, all processions and ceremonies. The main variables are flight timing (book 3–4 months ahead for best fares) and accommodation grade. Our land-only packages allow you to book your own transatlantic flights and join the programme on arrival in Lourdes.

What North American Pilgrims Find Surprising

Pilgrims from the USA and Canada consistently comment on two things: the scale of Lourdes (far larger than expected, with its own Hospitalité, Medical Bureau and 200 hotels) and the intimacy of the Grotto (smaller and more personal than they imagined). The international dimension also strikes North American pilgrims deeply — sharing the Torchlight Procession with pilgrims from Poland, South Korea, Brazil, Nigeria and Italy creates an experience of universal Church that is difficult to find elsewhere. Many return year after year.
