Lourdes welcomes pilgrims throughout the year, but each season offers a very different experience. The Sanctuary's liturgical programme runs at full capacity from April through October; in winter months the Grotto remains open 24 hours but most organised activities are suspended. Here is what to expect each month.
February: The Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes
February 11th is the anniversary of the first apparition, and the feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes. The Sanctuary organises a major celebration with special Masses, processions and a gathering of the sick. The town is quiet compared to summer, and crowds are moderate. Winter weather (temperatures 3–10°C) requires warm clothing, but there is something deeply moving about visiting in the cold grey of a February morning, the same weather Bernadette experienced.
March–April: Early Season
The Sanctuary's organised programme (Baths, processions, Blessing of the Sick) recommences in April. Early spring brings mild temperatures (10–16°C), the Pyrenees still snow-capped, and relatively small crowds. Accommodation prices are lower and the Grotto is accessible without queuing. Easter Week draws larger numbers for the Passion liturgies and Easter Vigil.
May–June: Ideal Balance
May and June are arguably the best months for a first pilgrimage. Temperatures are pleasant (15–22°C), the Sanctuary is fully operational, the Baths are open with manageable queues, and the national pilgrimages have not yet arrived in force. The Pyrenees are green and lush after spring rains, and the walking routes to Lourdes are at their most beautiful.
July–August: High Season
This is Lourdes at its most vibrant, and most crowded. The great national pilgrimages from Ireland (HCPT, Irish National Pilgrimage), the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Poland and dozens of other countries converge on Lourdes. The Esplanade Torchlight Procession can draw tens of thousands. Accommodation must be booked months in advance. Queues for the Baths can be three hours or more. If you find crowds energising and the sense of international community inspiring, this is the time to come.
September–October: Best for Walkers
September is the ideal month for walking pilgrimages to Lourdes, the summer heat has passed, mountain paths are clear of snow, and crowds in the Sanctuary are reducing. The Assumption season (mid-August to late September) is the most important festival period. October sees the final major national pilgrimages of the year. By late October, the Sanctuary's organised programme winds down for winter.
November–January: Winter Quiet
For a truly contemplative experience, consider a quiet winter visit. The Baths are usually closed, the processions simplified, but the Grotto is open day and night in all weathers. The winter light on the Sanctuary is extraordinary. Many spiritual directors recommend a winter visit for those seeking solitude and depth rather than community and ceremony.
