Long before budget airlines existed, pilgrims from across Europe arrived in Lourdes by train. The railway reached Lourdes in 1866, and within a decade it had transformed this small Pyrenean town into an international destination. Today the train remains a beautiful and sustainable way to travel to Lourdes, and for many pilgrims the journey itself, watching France unfold from the window of a TGV — becomes part of the spiritual experience.
The Paris Montparnasse to Lourdes TGV
The fastest and most direct rail option is the TGV from Paris Montparnasse to Lourdes, operated by SNCF. The journey takes approximately 4 hours 45 minutes on the direct TGV service, arriving at Lourdes station — a 10-minute walk from the Sanctuary entrance. Several trains run daily, including early morning departures that allow a same-day arrival in Lourdes from Paris. The service is comfortable, punctual and offers pleasant views across the Landes and Basque landscapes as you approach the Pyrenees. In the final half-hour, the mountains appear on the horizon and the anticipation builds.
Eurostar Connections from the UK
British pilgrims can travel entirely by rail: take the Eurostar from London St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord (2.5 hours), transfer across Paris to Gare Montparnasse (45 minutes by Metro or taxi), then board the TGV to Lourdes. Total journey time from London: approximately 8–9 hours. This is longer than flying but avoids airports entirely and delivers you to Lourdes station within walking distance of the Sanctuary. Many pilgrims find this unhurried rail journey a fitting prologue to a pilgrimage — time to read, to pray, to arrive gradually rather than suddenly.
Booking Your Train Tickets
SNCF tickets can be booked up to 3 months ahead at sncf-connect.com or via the Rail Europe booking platform. The earlier you book, the cheaper the fare. Standard fares for Paris–Lourdes range from €35 to €90 each way; Ouigo (SNCF's low-cost service) offers the same journey from as little as €10–€25 if booked well in advance, though it may require a connection. For groups of 8 or more, SNCF offers group rates; contact them directly or let us arrange this as part of your package. Seat reservations are included in TGV ticket prices.
Lourdes Station: Arriving by Rail
Lourdes train station is a ten-minute walk from the Sanctuary entrance and approximately fifteen minutes from most hotels in the town centre. It is a small, manageable station with a taxi rank outside and luggage storage facilities if you need to drop bags before check-in. Note that the walk from the station to the Sanctuary involves crossing the town centre; it is flat, well-signposted and entirely walkable. If you are travelling with significant mobility challenges, taxis are readily available for the short transfer.
Crossing France by Train as Pilgrimage
There is something fitting about arriving at a place of pilgrimage by train rather than aircraft. The journey from Paris to Lourdes passes through landscapes that have been walked, ridden and prayed over by pilgrims for centuries. Some groups deliberately choose the slower Intercités service (which stops at Bordeaux and Bayonne) to extend the journey and use the time for communal prayer, rosary, or shared reading. Others use the train journey for spiritual preparation: reading about Bernadette, journalling intentions, or simply sitting in quiet anticipation. The arrival at Lourdes station, with the Sanctuary spires visible from the platform, has moved many a pilgrim before they even reach the Grotto.
