Getting to Lourdes by plane is more straightforward than many pilgrims expect, provided you know which airport to use. Three airports serve the region, each with distinct advantages depending on your origin, travel dates and budget. Whether you are flying from Dublin, London, New York or Warsaw, this guide will help you find the best route to the Pyrenees.
Lourdes-Tarbes-Pyrénées Airport (LDE): The Closest Option
Lourdes-Tarbes-Pyrénées airport (IATA: LDE) is the obvious first choice, located just 10 kilometres from the Sanctuary, approximately a 15-minute taxi or shuttle ride. The key limitation is that it operates mainly seasonal routes (April to October) from a limited number of European cities. Ryanair serves it from Dublin, London Stansted and several other European cities; TUI and other charter operators run seasonal services in summer. If you can find a direct flight to LDE, take it — the convenience is unmatched and the airport is small and calm. However, do not build an itinerary entirely around LDE if your travel dates are outside peak season.
Toulouse-Blagnac Airport (TLS): The Year-Round Alternative
Toulouse-Blagnac (IATA: TLS) is the most reliable year-round option and handles excellent international connections. It is served by Air France, Ryanair, easyJet, Vueling, British Airways, Lufthansa and many others from across Europe, North Africa and beyond. The transfer from TLS to Lourdes takes approximately 90 minutes by coach or taxi, and shuttle services run regularly. The airport is well-organised with straightforward customs and luggage handling. For most pilgrims travelling outside the high season, or looking for more competitive fares, TLS is the practical choice.
Biarritz Airport (BIQ): The Hidden Gem
Biarritz-Pays Basque airport (IATA: BIQ) is an underrated option, approximately 90 minutes from Lourdes by road. It is served by Ryanair from London Stansted, Dublin, Manchester and several other UK and Irish airports, often with very competitive fares. The airport is smaller than Toulouse, queues are short, and the drive through the Pyrenean foothills to Lourdes is genuinely beautiful. If you are travelling from the UK or Ireland and find a good Ryanair fare to Biarritz, it is absolutely worth considering.
Getting from the Airport to Lourdes
From LDE: a taxi takes about 15 minutes and costs €25–€35. Shuttle services are available from most Lourdes hotels, particularly for organised groups — arrange in advance. From TLS: coach shuttle services run regularly and cost approximately €25 per person; private taxis cost €120–€150 for up to 4 people; car hire is available if you plan to explore the region. From BIQ: taxi or car hire is the most practical option (approximately €80–€100 for a private transfer). Our pilgrimage packages include airport transfers from all three airports.
Seasonal Routes and Booking Tips
Direct routes to LDE are only available April to October. For winter visits, route via TLS or Paris. Booking 2–3 months ahead secures the best fares on seasonal routes; some pilgrimage season flights sell out in March. Check both the budget airline websites directly and flight aggregators such as Google Flights for the best prices on connecting routes. Be aware that LDE has limited handling capacity for large groups; if you are bringing a group of 20 or more, coordinate luggage and transfers in advance through your pilgrimage company.
Luggage and Practical Considerations
Budget airlines serving Lourdes often charge separately for hold luggage — factor this into your cost comparison. For pilgrimage groups travelling with medical equipment, wheelchairs or large quantities of religious items, contact the airline at least two weeks ahead. Lourdes water containers (5-litre drums are popular) must be packed in hold luggage, not cabin bags. Remember that you will likely want to bring home religious goods purchased at the Sanctuary, so allowing some extra luggage allowance is sensible.
