The outdoor Way of the Cross at Lourdes climbs the wooded hillside behind the Sanctuary, following 14 stations carved in stone and bronze. The sculptures, remarkable works of 19th and 20th century religious art, depict each stage of Christ's Passion with vivid realism. At the summit, a panoramic Calvary scene overlooks the entire Sanctuary Domain and the Pyrenees. Walking these Stations is a profound act of pilgrimage in itself, many pilgrims do it barefoot.

The Stations

The 14 stations begin below the hillside and zigzag upward through mixed woodland. Each station features a large bronze or stone sculptural group. The quality of craftsmanship varies, some stations date from 1912, others from the 1950s renovation, but all are deeply expressive. Station XIV (Jesus is laid in the tomb) sits just below the summit Calvary.

The Summit Calvary

The three crosses of Calvary crown the hill above the Sanctuary. From here, on a clear day, you can see the entire Lourdes valley and the first peaks of the Pyrenees beyond. Many pilgrims linger here in prayer before descending via the rear path or returning the same way.

Pilgrim Tips

  • Best walked in the early morning or evening when it is cooler and quieter
  • Wear sturdy shoes, the stone path can be slippery after rain
  • Group Stations of the Cross are led by our pilgrimage team each afternoon
  • The accessible flat route follows the base of the hill; ask the Hospitalité for directions
