The Basilica of Saint Pius X, consecrated on 25 March 1958 to mark the centenary of the apparitions, is an architectural marvel beneath the esplanade of the Lourdes Sanctuary. Designed by the Italian engineer Pier Luigi Nervi in collaboration with architect Pierre Vago, this underground oval hall is 201 metres long and 81 metres wide — the largest underground church in the world, with a capacity of 25,000 pilgrims.

Architecture and Engineering

Nervi's design solved a formidable challenge: how to create a space large enough for a national pilgrimage under the Esplanade without disrupting the surface above. The solution was a pre-stressed concrete shell of 40 ribs that spring from a ring beam at ground level and converge at the apex, distributing the entire load without internal columns. The result is an unobstructed floor space that can accommodate 25,000 standing pilgrims or 12,000 seated. Daylight enters through translucent panels set between the ribs, casting the interior in a soft, diffuse light. The engineering achievement was so significant that Nervi's Lourdes design is studied in architectural schools worldwide.

Liturgical Life

The underground Basilica hosts major Masses, the International Eucharistic Procession on rainy days, the Adoration Chapel (perpetual exposition of the Blessed Sacrament 24 hours a day), and the great solemn ceremonies of the pilgrimage calendar. On peak days in July and August, when a national pilgrimage from Ireland, Italy or Poland arrives with 10,000 pilgrims, the underground Basilica is their home for central liturgical celebrations. The acoustic properties of the vast concrete shell are remarkable: a single choir voice fills the space with clarity.

The Perpetual Adoration Chapel

Beneath the main floor of the underground Basilica, a smaller Adoration Chapel maintains continuous exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, day and night, 365 days a year. Open at any hour, this chapel offers the most profound silence in the Sanctuary: a small, softly lit space where pilgrims can spend time in intimate prayer before the Blessed Sacrament regardless of what ceremonies are happening above.

Pilgrim Tips

  • The underground Basilica is the coolest space in the Sanctuary on hot summer days — ideal for midday rest and prayer
  • Visit the Perpetual Adoration Chapel in the small hours for a uniquely powerful experience of silence
  • Arrive 30 minutes early for any large ceremony — the space fills from the front
  • Fully wheelchair accessible via the ramp entrances; voiturettes can circulate freely on the level floor
