The hillside Stations of the Cross at Lourdes is one of the great outdoor devotional routes in Catholic pilgrimage. The path ascends through woodland to a panoramic Calvary, passing 14 life-size bronze sculptural groups depicting each stage of Christ's Passion. Many pilgrims walk barefoot as an act of penance and solidarity with Christ's suffering. The reflective atmosphere, the physical effort of the climb and the beauty of the natural setting combine to make this one of the most deeply moving experiences at Lourdes.
The Sculptures
The sculptural groups were installed in phases from 1912 onwards. They represent a range of artistic styles, from 19th century realism to mid-20th century expressionism, but all share an intense emotional directness that speaks powerfully to pilgrims of every cultural background. The figure of the fallen Christ at Station IX (Jesus falls for the third time) is particularly striking.
The Accessible Route
Recognising that not all pilgrims can climb the hillside, the Sanctuary provides an accessible flat-ground Stations route at the base of the hill. This route features small relief tablets depicting each station and is accessible for wheelchairs and those with limited mobility. Voiturettes (attendant-pushed wheelchair carriages) are available from the Hospitalité.
