Bernadette's birthplace, 7 January 1844

Building type

Working watermill on the Lapacca canal, restored to period appearance

The Boly Mill (Moulin de Boly) is a modest watermill in the old town of Lourdes where Bernadette Soubirous was born on 7 January 1844. The family lived above the mill which François Soubirous operated on the Lapacca canal. The Boly Mill represents Bernadette's early years of relative comfort before misfortune reduced the family to the destitution of the Cachot — and it stands as the place where the girl who would receive Our Lady's message entered the world.

Bernadette's Early Life at the Boly Mill

François Soubirous leased the Boly Mill from his father-in-law Justin Castérot. In the early years of his tenancy, the mill was productive and the family lived a modest but decent life. Bernadette was born here and spent her first eight years in the rooms above the grinding stones. The contrast between the relative dignity of the Boly Mill and the squalor of the Cachot is essential to understanding Bernadette's interior life at the time of the apparitions.

The Mill Today

The Boly Mill has been carefully preserved by the Sisters of Our Lady of Lourdes and is open to pilgrims as a place of quiet reflection. The original mill room is maintained with period furnishings. The room where Bernadette was born contains a simple wooden cradle and a statue of Our Lady. The mill garden, on the banks of the Lapacca, is a peaceful place to sit and reflect on the remarkable journey that began in this humble building.

Combining the Boly Mill and the Cachot

The Boly Mill and the Cachot are only five minutes apart on foot in the old town of Lourdes. Walking from one to the other — from the place of relative comfort to the dungeon of destitution — tells the full story of the Soubirous family's fall and of the extraordinary context in which the apparitions occurred. Our guided "Bernadette's Lourdes" town tour covers both sites, as well as the Church of Saint-Pierre where Bernadette was baptised.

Pilgrim Tips

  • Combine with the Cachot (5 min walk) and the Church of Saint-Pierre (2 min) for a complete "Bernadette's Lourdes" morning
  • Visit in the morning when the old town is quieter; the mill is often overlooked by pilgrims focused on the Sanctuary
  • The mill garden is a beautiful spot for quiet prayer — the sound of the Lapacca canal echoes through the space
