Notable feature
15 Rosary chapels in a circular nave
The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary sits directly beneath the Upper Basilica, forming the base of the distinctive three-church structure that defines the Lourdes skyline. Built between 1883 and 1901 in Romanesque-Byzantine style, the Lower Basilica is a place of grandeur and intimacy, its circular nave with 15 chapels dedicated to the mysteries of the Rosary creates a space perfectly designed for contemplative prayer and Eucharistic celebration.
The Rosary Chapels
The 15 chapels along the circumference of the nave each depict a mystery of the Rosary in rich mosaic work donated by various nations. Walking the circumference is itself a form of meditative prayer, moving from the Joyful to the Sorrowful to the Glorious Mysteries in turn.
The Eucharistic Procession
The International Eucharistic Procession begins here each afternoon at 17:00 during the pilgrimage season. The procession moves from the Rosary Basilica along the Esplanade to the Blessing of the Sick at the open-air altar. This is one of the most powerful ceremonies at Lourdes.
